A football team would never win a game if all the team were
quarterbacks - or if all the team were offensive ends. Putting together
the management and content development teams at the Sport Maniac, we
utilized the same principle. We called upon premier people in different
categories. That's how we built our winning team.
Marilyn M. Pink, Ph.D., MBA, P.T.
Marilyn Pink has over 20 years of experience in healthcare
and sports as a businesswoman, clinician and scientist.
She holds masters degrees in business and in physical therapy
as well as a doctoral degree in research methodology and
anatomy. She has leveraged her academic training into both the
public and private sectors. She has proven successes in the corporate
world as well as in startup companies. The focus of her career
is orthopedics and sports medicine. In the sports world, she
has worked with Olympic, professional, collegiate and recreational
athletes. In the medical world, she has worked with hospitals and
outpatient clinics.
Examples of her accomplishments include the following:
- Published over 100 research articles in clinical and basic science.
- Recipient of multiple research awards in Physical Therapy and Orthopaedics.
- Co-published books on golf exercises, baseball exercises and a textbook on orthopaedic surgery.
- Lectures nationally and internationally.
- Director of Physical Therapy at UCLA for the XXVIII Olympic Games.
- Analyst for the USOTC Elite Athlete Program.
- Research Director for multiple academic institutions.
- Initiated and facilitated 15 major PR activities (CNN, NBC, Vogue, Muscle and Fitness, LA Times, etc.) in one year,
- Developed an orthopedic product line model that was identified as the model to follow within 100+ hospitals in a publicly held company
- Designed a prototype for an integrated spine program for a hospital system which involved health club liaisons
- Developed Web strategies and products for the Western Region of a chain of publicly held hospitals
Frank W. Jobe, M.D.
Dr. Jobe is the Medical Director of the Baseball Sport Maniac and the Golf Sport Maniac,
and a board member. Dr. Jobe is one of the founders of the internationally recognized
Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. The associates at Kerlan-Jobe serve as team
physicians/consultants for a variety of elite teams including the Los Angeles
Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Anaheim Angeles, Anaheim Ducks,
PGA, Sr. PGA, and the University of Southern California Athletic Department.
Dr. Jobe was the first physician to attend Major League Baseball Spring Training,
and many believe it to be he who defined the role of ‘team physician’ in baseball.
Examples of his accomplishments include:
- Clinical Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, USC,
- Orthopaedic Consultant, LA Dodgers,
- Orthopaedic Consultant PGA Tour and Sr. PGA tour,
- Published over 150 peer reviewed research articles in Sports Medicine,
- Internationally recognized lecturer in Sports Medicine,
- Developed the elbow and shoulder surgeries that allowed injured professional ball players
to return to play. The respective first recipients of these were Tommy John and Orel Hershiser.
Helaine Lopes, Ph.D., A.T.C., CSCS
Helaine offers a diverse exerience in working with the athlete.
Helaine served as an Athletic Trainer at the University of Southern California (21 years).
She also served as a part-time faculty member, teaching courses for the Kinesiology Department.
While attending USC as an undergraduate, Helaine worked as in intern with the
National Athletic Health Institute at Centinela Hospital,
assisting in physical examination and exercise prescription for professional
and amateur athletes as well as executives and the general public. This led to
a post-graduate degree in Exercise Physiology.
Examples of responsibilities and accomplishments include:
- Planned, organized and implemented rehabilitation programs as prescribed by the USC Team
physician for USC athletes,
- Provided medical emergency coverage to assigned teams (both home and away),
- Served as the liaison between the team physician and the athlete in regards to all medical
problems involving that athlete (evaluation, referrals, etc.),
- Assist coaches in designing conditioning, weight training and nutrition programs,
- Taught academic courses in Kinesiology and Exercise Physiology,
- Served as an Athletic Trainer in the XXXIIIrd Summer Olympics for swimming and diving,
- Served as the medical coordinator for the National Youths Sports Program, a federally funded
program for youths, 10-16 years of age, participating in a variety of sports
and activities,
- Lectured on Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries in various clinical workshops.
Brian Scherr, P.T., CSCS
Brian is the Baseball Clinical Specialist for the Baseball Sport Maniac.
He was most recently the Physical Therapist for the Anaheim Angeles Major
League Baseball team. Prior to the Angeles, he served as the Minor
League Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In addition to his background in Physical Therapy he is also a Certified
Strength and Conditioning Specialist. His experience with start ups includes
developing research and rehabilitation protocols for SportsRac, a
rehabilitation device company out of Manhattan Beach, California.
His expertise has brought him into education as an instructor in
Anatomy and Sports Physical Therapy to graduate and post-graduate academic
courses. In addition, he has served as a guest lecturer at clinical workshops.
Examples of his accomplishments include:
- Developed an off season injury
prevention and strengthening program for professional baseball players,
- Developed and implemented an examination schema and rehabilitation
protocols for injured athletes,
- Responsibilities have included overseeing the health and conditioning
of 300 professional athletes and 8 athletic trainers,
- Taught academic courses in Anatomy and Sports Physical Therapy,
- Lectured on the Biomechanics of Throwing at clinical workshops.
Stephen L. Gordon, Ph.D.
Dr. Gordon has nearly 30 years of research and management experience.
His longest tenure was for 19 years as the Chief, Musculoskeletal
Diseases Branch of the National Institutes of Health. In addition,
for 6 years, he has been the Vice President of Osiris Therapeutics,
a Biotech firm focused on cell-based tissue regeneration. Dr. Gordon holds a
doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering.
Specific examples of his accomplishments include:
- Edited or co-edited six orthopaedic textbooks on subjects such as sports medicine and low back pain,
- Led product research and development effort to establish a bone regeneration product,
- Founded an ergonomics consulting firm,
- Led the Federal effort to promote understanding and awareness of osteoporosis,
- Authored and presented numerous scientific articles,
- Founding fellow of the American Institute of Medicaland Biological Engineering,
- Consultant to many medical school departments and biotech companies.
